An envelope system for reserve funds
How three Gwangju households label manila folders for emergency, pension, and gift savings.
Envelope filing survives humid summers better than sticky notes on passbook covers. Three clients we visited last spring shared distinct labelling schemes worth comparing.
The colour-coded approach
Mrs. Kang in Seo-gu uses red folders for six-month emergency cash, blue for NPS-related transfers, and green for Chuseok gift savings. Each folder holds photocopies of passbook cover pages — never the originals — plus a single sheet listing last verified balance.
The numbered sequence
Mr. and Mrs. Yoon in Buk-gu number folders 01 through 09 in the order accounts would be accessed during a family emergency. Folder 01 holds the most liquid passbook; folder 09 holds a five-year CD they intend never to touch early. Their checklist mirrors the numbers.
The seasonal rotation
Retired teacher Mr. Lim swaps folder labels each quarter. Winter folders track heating-fund reserves; summer folders track travel savings. The practice sounds elaborate, but he reports fewer mistaken withdrawals since adopting it.
Binding envelopes to your ledger
Whichever system you choose, record the folder name or number in the first column of your balance book beside each account entry. During ledger reviews we reconcile folder labels against book headings — mismatches usually mean a passbook migrated without updating the ledger.
Commission a balance book with a pre-printed folder column if this habit suits your household.
