Marking maturity dates on paper calendars

Why tentative CD maturities belong in pencil until a passbook confirms the term.

Marking maturity dates on paper calendars

When a branch officer quotes a maturity date verbally, write it lightly in pencil on your wall calendar. Only trace over it in ink after the passbook stamp appears.

We learned this habit from a Buk-gu fishmonger who lost a day’s interest because he assumed a 12-month deposit had matured on the anniversary of his verbal agreement. The passbook showed a different start date — the teller had backdated the opening to align with a promotional rate.

Pencil, then ink

Use pencil for any date that has not appeared on stamped paper. Reserve red ink for confirmed maturities within the next thirty days. Blue ink works for quarterly review reminders on pension transfer accounts that lack fixed terms.

Where to post the calendar

Kitchen cabinets and hallway bulletin boards outperform bedroom walls. Clients who file passbooks in bedroom drawers often forget to check a calendar they cannot see while making morning tea.

Pairing with your checklist

The master reserve checklist should list the same maturity date as your calendar. When they disagree, the passbook wins. Cross out the calendar entry and note the correction on your checklist verification column.

If your household juggles more than eight maturities per year, consider our laminated twelve-month strip described on the checklists page.
